"The myth of inner city youth as screw-ups is so powerful that adults often dismiss these students before even listening to them."
This quote stood out to me the most because it is so true..
I have personally encountered this, as well as many friends/associates that I have. I hate that. It's like just because I am a student, smart or not, I'm treated like a statistic. Even when I attempt to speak up about obvious problems in my school or even the school system, the administration doesnt care to listen.. Probably because I don't have a "degree" like they do, but who could tell you better about what's going on than the students themselves? We are the ones affected by the system and the flaws in it.. So are OUR futures.. Not theirs... I hope they soon realize that we are the key to making a difference
