Hip Hop to our culture

Hip Hop is a big influence on the behaviors of citizens, especially in urban areas. Music such as Hip Hop usually has a part in setting an unspoken standard of how you're supposed to act and carry yourself in public.

Examples of this is how it is expected for a man to be able to "Pimp" and have lots of women. Another example is how women are subjugated for sexual appeal such as in ads or music videos. Factors such as these contribute to the way men treat women.

This influence can be bad, for it crates effects such as the ones mentioned above and more. To clarify what I mean, some music in Hip Hop suggests that doing things like killing, taking drugs, and going to jail is acceptable or "cool."

A main theme in Hip Hop is to have respect or else you end up being a "punk", someone weak. As a result, this type of culture perpetuates that you have to have power in today's society. This "power" includes being in gangs, having weapons such as knives and guns, and going to prison as someone who is "real."  As a result the idea of what masculinity is begins to change rapidly.
Another influence from Hip Hop is the desensitizing to violence that is brought forth; however this violence can be also found in other mediums of entertainment such as movies, books, and video games. These trends lead to men believed it to be okay to die young, fight, take drugs, or even kill. It also has the effect of influencing men to sexually objectify women.

Another thing about Hip Hop culture is that it perpetuates other sub-cultures and minorities such as Mexicans and gays.

An important aspect to consider is that these details derive from styles and patterns brought forth from life in prison.

One reason things are believed to be this way is because of "gatekeepers" who only allow this perpetuation of blacks in Hip Hop to be this way. As a result it becomes hard to stray from this way of portraying blacks even if a new star wanted to try.

  1. Nice job. Music as a form of culture is an agent of socialization. There's also conscious hip hop, but that doesn't sell as well.
